In order to correctly match 3d elements to background plates, lighting reference must be gathered during filming. This can be done by taking notes of  the positioning of lights and reflectors and the sun itself, or by simply holding up matte white spheres where the intended 3d element will be eventually placed. Also helpful is the use of a mirrored ball for gathering information helpful for reflection maps. Joseph Pole was responsible for gathering this data during the shoot. What follows is a montage of his work.
